At what age is cerebral palsy diagnosed?

Most children with cerebral palsy are diagnosed between 12 and 24 months of age. However, the age of diagnosis depends on the severity of symptoms:

  • Severe CP – can be recognised within the first few months of life.
  • Moderate CP – often diagnosed around 1–2 years when walking or movement delays appear.
  • Mild CP – may not be confirmed until 3–5 years, when fine motor or coordination difficulties become clearer.

Early diagnosis allows families to access NDIS-funded early intervention supports, which significantly improve long-term outcomes.
