At what age is developmental language disorder diagnosed?

Developmental Language Disorder can usually be diagnosed from around age 4–5, when language skills are more developed and reliable testing is possible. Before this age, children may be labelled as “late talkers,” but many will catch up naturally. If difficulties persist past preschool years, a diagnosis of DLD is more likely.

However, early intervention is recommended even before a formal diagnosis. Children showing signs of delayed speech and language can still receive therapy under the NDIS if the difficulties are significant.
