Can ADHD be genetic?
ADHD is highly heritable, meaning it often runs in families. If a parent has ADHD, their child has a higher likelihood of developing it too. Twin and family studies show that genetics account for a large portion of the risk.
However, genetics is not the only factor—environmental and developmental influences also play a role. Knowing the family history can help clinicians make an accurate diagnosis and tailor treatment early.
