Can ADHD develop?

ADHD is classified as a neurodevelopmental condition, meaning it begins during early brain development in childhood. It cannot suddenly “develop” later in life, although symptoms may not always be recognised until adolescence or adulthood. This is especially true for people with inattentive-type ADHD, where symptoms can be subtle or misunderstood. Some individuals only seek diagnosis when their coping strategies no longer work under stress, such as at university or in parenthood. A retrospective review of school history and childhood behaviour is often used in adult diagnosis to confirm early onset.
