Can depression cause psychosis?

In severe cases, depression can lead to a condition called psychotic depression, where a person experiences hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that aren’t there) or delusions (false beliefs). This is less common but very serious, and it requires immediate medical attention. Psychotic depression is treated with a combination of medication and therapy under close professional care.

If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of psychosis, please talk to family or friends and don’t go through this alone. For urgent support, call Lifeline right away on 13 11 14. You can also contact us—we’re here to help you take the next step safely.
