Can GDD lead to autism?

Global Developmental Delay (GDD) does not directly lead to autism, but some children initially diagnosed with GDD may later be diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This is because early developmental delays can overlap with traits of autism, and an autism diagnosis often becomes clearer as the child grows.

Key points:
• GDD is a broad term for delays in multiple areas before age five
• Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition with specific traits in social communication and behaviour
• A child can have both GDD and autism
• An early GDD diagnosis may prompt further assessment for autism over time
