Can global developmental delay go away?

In some cases, the signs of Global Developmental Delay may lessen or resolve over time — especially if the child responds well to therapy. However, in other cases, GDD may be the early stage of a more permanent condition, such as an intellectual disability or autism.

GDD may “go away” when:
  • The delay was mild and temporary
  • It was related to an early life factor (e.g. prematurity) that resolved
  • Early intervention helped the child catch up

Regardless of the outcome, early supports help every child reach their full potential.
