Can kids with cerebral palsy talk?

Many children with cerebral palsy can talk, though some may have speech difficulties due to challenges controlling oral muscles. Speech may be unclear (dysarthria) or delayed, and some children may also experience language processing difficulties. Supports include:

  • Speech therapy to improve articulation and breathing control.
  • AAC devices for children who are non-verbal or need extra support.
  • Parent and teacher training to promote communication in everyday life.
With therapy, many children with CP successfully develop verbal or alternative communication skills.
