Can psychology prescribe medicine?
In Australia, psychologists cannot prescribe medicine. They are trained in understanding human thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, and they use evidence-based therapies like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and other talking therapies. Only psychiatrists (medical doctors who specialise in mental health) and general practitioners (GPs) can prescribe medications for mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder. Psychologists often work closely with GPs and psychiatrists to provide holistic care that combines medication (if required) with therapy and behavioural strategies.
