Yes. Behaviour therapy is widely used to support children who display aggression, whether it’s verbal (e.g. yelling, threats) or physical (e.g. hitting, biting). Under the NDIS, therapists conduct a Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA) to understand the function of aggression—such as gaining attention, avoiding a task, or expressing unmet needs.
Once the cause is identified, the therapist develops a Positive Behaviour Support Plan that includes proactive strategies to prevent escalation, teaching of replacement behaviours (e.g. asking for help), and reactive strategies to safely respond when aggression occurs. Families and support staff are trained in how to stay calm, keep everyone safe, and avoid unintentionally reinforcing the behaviour.
This type of support is often funded under the “Improved Relationships” category of the NDIS and may include school-based or in-home strategies.
