Data collection is a core element of behaviour therapy. It ensures that the strategies being used are effective and allows therapists to make evidence-based decisions about what’s working and what needs to change. Under NDIS-funded services, data is also required to demonstrate progress for plan reviews and funding renewals.
Therapists might collect data on the frequency of a behaviour, the success rate of a skill, or the time it takes a child to calm down after an outburst. Tools like ABC (Antecedent–Behaviour–Consequence) charts, frequency graphs, and skill acquisition trackers are commonly used. Families are often encouraged to take simple data at home using checklists or tally sheets, so they feel involved in the process.
