Should I choose plan management or self-management under the NDIS?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions by NDIS participants and their families. Both plan management and self-management offer flexibility, but they differ in how much responsibility you take on.

Plan Management:

  • A registered plan manager (like daar) handles all the admin.

  • You get access to both NDIS-registered and unregistered providers.

  • Your manager tracks budgets, pays invoices, and provides regular reports.

  • You retain choice and control, without doing the paperwork.

  • It's fully funded in your plan under “Improved Life Choices.”

Self-Management:

  • You are fully responsible for paying invoices, claiming funds via the portal, and record-keeping.

  • Offers maximum flexibility and control.

  • You need to be confident with financial admin and compliance.

  • Risk of delayed payments or audit stress if not managed properly.

For many parents supporting a child with disability, plan management offers the perfect balance of control and support. You still choose your providers and set your goals—but you don’t have to worry about invoices, tracking, or NDIA requirements.
