While general management theories describe different planning types, in the NDIS context, the following four types of planning are key to managing an NDIS plan effectively:
-
Support Planning – This refers to identifying what the participant wants to achieve (goals) and what supports are needed. It includes help from allied health, therapy services, and assistive technologies.
-
Financial Planning – This involves managing budgets across different funding categories like Core, Capacity Building, and Capital. Your plan manager helps forecast and monitor spending to prevent overspending or underutilisation.
-
Service Planning – Involves choosing the right service providers (including unregistered ones if you’re plan-managed) and negotiating service agreements. A good plan manager can also recommend trusted providers.
-
Contingency Planning – Life is unpredictable, so it’s vital to plan for changes in circumstances. This includes holding back funds for emergency support, or preparing for unexpected needs that may arise before a plan review.
These planning elements ensure your NDIS plan stays flexible, purposeful, and sustainable across its 12-month cycle.
