What does a behaviour support specialist do?

A behaviour support specialist—often referred to as a Behaviour Support Practitioner (BSP) under the NDIS—develops and implements strategies to improve quality of life and reduce challenging behaviours in children and adults with disability. In Australia, they work within the Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) framework, focusing on understanding the function behind behaviours rather than just managing the symptoms.

They may:

  • Conduct Functional Behaviour Assessments (FBAs)

  • Develop Behaviour Support Plans (BSPs)

  • Train families, support workers, and schools in PBS strategies

  • Monitor and review the plan over time for effectiveness

  • Collaborate with other allied health professionals

Their work is especially important for NDIS participants who require specialised behaviour support funding.
