What is speech therapy?

Speech therapy is a clinical service designed to support individuals with communication difficulties, language disorders, speech sound delays, and feeding or swallowing challenges. In Australia, speech therapy is often delivered by certified Speech Pathologists and can be accessed through private providers, public health, or NDIS funding.

For children, therapy may focus on:

  • Building vocabulary and sentence structure

  • Correcting speech sounds (like lisps or stuttering)

  • Supporting communication in autism or ADHD

  • Developing social skills and understanding body language

Under the NDIS, speech therapy helps build capacity in communication, independence, and daily participation.
