How autism is diagnosed?

Autism is diagnosed through a comprehensive developmental assessment conducted by trained professionals. This usually involves observing the child’s behaviour, collecting input from parents and educators, and using standardised tools like the ADOS. A formal diagnosis is made based on criteria in the DSM-5, which looks at communication, behaviour, and social interaction differences. Assessments may involve paediatricians, psychologists, or speech pathologists, and can take place over several sessions. A confirmed diagnosis allows access to funded therapies and other supports.
