How common is Down syndrome?

Down syndrome is the most common chromosomal condition worldwide, including in Australia. On average, it occurs in about 1 in every 700 live births. Each year in Australia, around 270 babies are born with Down syndrome. It can occur in children of any background, ethnicity, or family history.

Advances in healthcare and early intervention have greatly improved life expectancy and quality of life for people with Down syndrome, with many living into their 60s and beyond.
