How do you get cerebral palsy?

A person does not “catch” or “develop” cerebral palsy later in life—it results from brain injury or abnormal brain development in early life. This can happen:
  1. Before birth – due to maternal infections, restricted blood flow, or stroke in the womb.
  2. During birth – complications such as prolonged labour or lack of oxygen.
  3. After birth – from severe jaundice, meningitis, head trauma, or very premature birth.
These events affect areas of the brain responsible for movement and coordination.
