How does exercise physiology support children with autism?

Exercise physiology plays a vital role in supporting children with autism by using structured, evidence-based physical activity to improve motor skills, coordination, strength, and emotional regulation. Many children on the autism spectrum experience challenges with movement planning, balance, and social engagement. An Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) creates individualised programs that are not only developmentally appropriate but also aligned with the child’s NDIS goals—whether it’s to participate in school, play more independently, or improve communication through movement.

At DAAR, our exercise physiology sessions are designed to be fun, flexible, and sensory-aware. We support children in-clinic, at home, or in their local community, making therapy accessible and consistent. Movement-based therapy is particularly effective in helping autistic children manage anxiety, increase attention span, and build confidence in their body. Our team collaborates with parents and support coordinators to ensure all activities are meaningful, safe, and motivating for each child.
