How is ADHD diagnosed?
ADHD is diagnosed through a comprehensive clinical assessment by a qualified health professional such as a paediatrician, psychiatrist, or clinical psychologist.
In Australia, the process typically involves:
• Interviews with the individual and/or parents or carers
• Standardised ADHD behaviour rating scales (e.g., Conners or Vanderbilt)
• Observations of functioning across home, school, and community settings
• Rule-out of other conditions (e.g., anxiety, autism, learning disorders)
Diagnosis is based on criteria from the DSM-5 and must show that symptoms significantly impair daily life in at least two environments.
