How is ADHD diagnosed in adults?

Adults with ADHD are diagnosed by a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist who reviews childhood history and current challenges. Because symptoms often change over time, diagnosis includes assessing attention, impulsivity, and functioning at work or home. Clinicians use self-report tools and may speak with partners or family. Evidence of symptoms before age 12 is required, even if it was never formally diagnosed. Many Australian adults first realise they have ADHD after struggling with work or relationships. A GP referral can help access a formal assessment.
