How is oppositional defiant disorder diagnosed?

ODD is diagnosed through a comprehensive assessment by a qualified mental health or behavioural specialist. Diagnosis typically involves:
  1. 1Clinical Interview – with parents, caregivers, and sometimes teachers to gather behaviour history.
  2. 2Behaviour Checklists & Rating Scales – standardised tools to assess frequency and severity of behaviours.
  3. 3Observation – in clinical settings, school, or home environments.
  4. DSM-5 Criteria – behaviours must persist for at least 6 months, occur with non-sibling interactions, and cause significant disruption to daily life.
Early diagnosis helps ensure children receive the right interventions, such as behavioural therapy, to improve emotional regulation and relationships.
