How is selective mutism diagnosed?
Selective mutism is diagnosed through a combination of behavioural observation, parent interviews, and input from educators. A clinician—such as a child psychologist, paediatrician, or speech pathologist—will:
- Assess the child’s ability to speak in comfortable settings
- Review developmental, medical, and family history
- Rule out speech/language disorders or other conditions
- Compare behaviour against DSM-5 diagnostic criteria.
