How is selective mutism diagnosed?

Selective mutism is diagnosed through a combination of behavioural observation, parent interviews, and input from educators. A clinician—such as a child psychologist, paediatrician, or speech pathologist—will:

  • Assess the child’s ability to speak in comfortable settings
  • Review developmental, medical, and family history
  • Rule out speech/language disorders or other conditions
  • Compare behaviour against DSM-5 diagnostic criteria.
Diagnosis is collaborative and often involves parents, teachers, and healthcare providers. Contact us now.
