How rare is global developmental delay?

While some developmental disabilities are considered rare, Global Developmental Delay is not classified as a rare condition. In fact, it is a relatively common concern seen in early childhood development.

Approximately 1 in 25 to 1 in 33 children under the age of five in Australia may be diagnosed with GDD. It’s often the first diagnosis given before a more specific condition (such as autism or intellectual disability) is confirmed.

Early screening by GPs, child health nurses, or paediatricians plays a vital role in identifying GDD.
