Is cerebral palsy genetic?
Cerebral palsy is not typically a genetic condition. It is most often caused by events that damage the developing brain rather than inherited traits. However, in rare cases, genetic factors may increase vulnerability to brain injury or abnormal brain development.
Current research in Australia and globally shows that environment, pregnancy complications, and perinatal events are far more common causes than genetics. Families should know CP is not something parents “cause” or pass down in most cases.
