Is Down syndrome hereditary?
In most cases, Down syndrome is not hereditary. About 95% of cases (Trisomy 21 and Mosaic Down syndrome) happen randomly during cell division.
Only Translocation Down syndrome, which makes up around 3–4% of cases, can sometimes be inherited from a parent who carries a balanced translocation. Even then, the chance of passing it on depends on the parent’s genetic makeup.
Genetic counselling can help families understand the risks and inheritance patterns.
