What are cognitive developmental milestones?
Cognitive developmental milestones are the skills that show how children think, learn, and solve problems as they grow. In infancy, this includes recognising parents, exploring with their hands and mouth, and showing curiosity about the environment. By around 12–18 months, children start using everyday objects correctly, such as a spoon or phone.
At 2–3 years, they begin sorting shapes and colours, engaging in pretend play, and solving simple puzzles. By preschool, they can count to 10, understand time-related words like “today” or “later,” and show early literacy skills.
These milestones are essential for preparing children for school and lifelong learning. If a child struggles with cognitive skills, early intervention programs can provide tailored activities to encourage development.
