What are communication developmental milestones?

Communication developmental milestones are the skills children develop to understand and share information with others. These milestones cover both verbal and non-verbal abilities, such as crying, babbling, gestures, facial expressions, and eventually using words and sentences.

For example, babies typically begin cooing and responding to voices around 2 months, babbling by 6 months, and using simple words like “mama” or “dada” by their first birthday. By preschool age, children are usually able to follow simple instructions, ask questions, and express their needs more clearly.

Tracking communication milestones is important because delays may signal hearing difficulties, speech disorders, or broader developmental conditions. Early intervention and speech therapy can help children build confidence and catch up to their peers.
