What are developmental milestones and red flags?

Developmental milestones are the expected skills children achieve at certain ages, while red flags are warning signs that may indicate a delay. The Raising Children Network and NSW Health highlight examples such as:

  • Not smiling by 3 months.
  • No babbling by 9 months.
  • Not walking by 18 months.
  • No two-word phrases by 2 years.
  • Difficulty interacting with others.
These red flags don’t always mean a disorder but suggest professional assessment is needed. The NDIS encourages early referral to intervention if milestones are not met.
