What are emotional developmental milestones?

Emotional developmental milestones track how children recognise, express, and manage their feelings. In the first year, babies show emotions such as joy, sadness, and fear through facial expressions and crying.

By toddlerhood, children begin to show affection, frustration, or independence more clearly, and may have tantrums as they learn to manage emotions.

By preschool, they can label feelings like happy, sad, or angry, and start using simple strategies to calm themselves. By school age, many children can understand more complex emotions such as pride, guilt, or empathy for others. These milestones are vital for building resilience and healthy relationships. If children find it difficult to manage emotions, psychology or behavioural therapy can provide support.
