What are infant developmental milestones?

Infant developmental milestones are the skills and behaviours most babies learn to do by certain ages, such as smiling, rolling, sitting, and babbling. In Australia, these are outlined in the NSW Health Blue Book (Personal Health Record) and the Raising Children Network.

For example, babies often smile socially by 6–8 weeks, roll over by 4–6 months, and sit without support by around 8–9 months (Raising Children Network, 2024). These milestones are guides, not deadlines, as every child develops differently. If delays are noticed, early support is encouraged through services like the NDIS Early Childhood Early Intervention (ECEI) program.
