What are social developmental milestones?

Social developmental milestones describe how children interact with others and build relationships. In the first months, babies recognise familiar faces and smile socially. By around 1 year, they may show separation anxiety and prefer certain people.

At 2 years, toddlers often play alongside others in parallel play and start learning to share. By 3–4 years, children begin to play cooperatively, take turns, and enjoy group activities. By 5 years and beyond, they can make friends, follow group rules, and show empathy towards others.

These milestones are important for school readiness and building confidence in community settings. If delays in social skills are present, early social skills groups or behavioural support can help.
