What are the diagnostic criteria for ARFID?

According to the DSM-5, ARFID is diagnosed when there is an eating disturbance (avoidant or restrictive) leading to one or more of the following:

  • Significant weight loss or failure to grow in children
  • Nutritional deficiency
  • Dependence on supplements or tube feeding
  • Marked interference with social or daily life

Importantly, ARFID is not explained by body image concerns, cultural practices, or lack of food availability. In Australia, these criteria are applied by clinicians such as psychologists, paediatricians, and dietitians to ensure accurate diagnosis and access to care.
