What are the different types of bipolar disorder?

The DSM-5 recognises three main types of bipolar disorder:

  1. Bipolar I Disorder – defined by at least one full manic episode, often with depressive episodes.
  2. Bipolar II Disorder – defined by recurring hypomania and major depression.
  3. Cyclothymic Disorder – long-term mood fluctuations that are less severe but still disruptive.
Other specified or unspecified bipolar conditions may be diagnosed when symptoms don’t fully meet these categories but still impact daily life. Each type requires tailored support.
