What are the four main types of OCD?

OCD can present in different ways, but it is often grouped into four main categories:

  1. Contamination – Fear of germs, illness, or environmental toxins, leading to cleaning and avoidance behaviours.
  2. Checking – Repeatedly verifying things like locks, appliances, or safety measures to prevent harm.
  3. Symmetry and Ordering – Needing items arranged “just right” or in perfect alignment
  4. Intrusive Thoughts – Unwanted, distressing thoughts or mental images, often about taboo topics
