What are the risk factors for cerebral palsy?

Several factors increase the likelihood of cerebral palsy, though they do not guarantee it will occur. Key risk factors include:

  • Premature birth (especially before 28 weeks).
  • Low birth weight (under 2.5kg).
  • Multiple births (twins or triplets).
  • Maternal infections during pregnancy.
  • Complicated or prolonged labour.
  • Newborn jaundice or seizures.
  • Family history of developmental disorders.
Recognising risk factors allows for closer monitoring and early intervention if signs of CP appear.
