What are the signs of Down syndrome in newborns?

In newborns, Down syndrome may be identified through:
  • Low muscle tone (the baby feels “floppy” when held).
  • A flat nasal bridge and small head.
  • Upward slanting eyes and small ears.
  • A single crease across the palm of the hand.
  • Lower birth weight or shorter length.
Doctors usually confirm the diagnosis with a chromosome test (karyotype). It’s important to remember that while physical signs can suggest Down syndrome, only genetic testing provides certainty.
