What are the types of cerebral palsy?

Cerebral palsy is classified into several main types based on movement and muscle patterns:
  1. Spastic CP – stiff muscles and difficulty controlling movement (most common).
  2. Dyskinetic CP – involuntary movements, including twisting or jerky motions.
  3. Ataxic CP – issues with balance, depth perception, and fine motor skills.
  4. Mixed CP – features of more than one type, often spastic and dyskinetic combined.
Each type presents differently, and treatment is individualised to support the child’s goals and independence.
