What behaviours do people with OCD commonly do?

People with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) often perform compulsions — repetitive behaviours or mental rituals — in response to intrusive thoughts (obsessions). These behaviours are intended to reduce anxiety or prevent feared events, even if they are not realistically connected to the outcome. Common behaviours include:
  • Washing or cleaning excessively to remove perceived contamination
  • Checking locks, appliances, or personal items multiple times
  • Arranging or ordering objects until they feel “just right”
  • Avoiding people, places, or situations that trigger obsessions
  • Mentally repeating phrases, numbers, or prayers to feel safe
These actions are not habits or preferences — they are driven by distress and can be time-consuming, impacting daily life.
