What causes cerebral palsy?

Cerebral palsy (CP) is caused by damage to the developing brain, which disrupts normal movement and posture control. The damage can occur before birth (prenatal), during labour and delivery (perinatal), or shortly after birth (postnatal).

Causes may include lack of oxygen to the brain, infection during pregnancy, premature birth, stroke, or brain injury in early life. In many cases, the exact cause cannot be pinpointed, but early diagnosis helps families access therapy and support sooner.
