what causes cerebral palsy (CP) during pregnancy?

Cerebral palsy (CP) can be caused by events that affect the developing brain during pregnancy. These factors may interfere with normal brain growth and increase the risk of CP:

  • Maternal infections such as rubella, cytomegalovirus, or toxoplasmosis.
  • Restricted oxygen or blood supply to the baby’s brain while in the womb.
  • Placental complications that reduce nutrient or oxygen delivery.
  • Maternal health conditions such as thyroid issues, preeclampsia, or seizures.
  • Exposure to toxins including alcohol, drugs, or certain environmental risks.
  • Genetic vulnerabilities that make the baby more susceptible to brain injury.
Not all pregnancies with these risk factors lead to CP, but monitoring and early prenatal care are important in reducing risks.
