What causes Down syndrome at birth?
At birth, Down syndrome is caused by the same factor as during pregnancy—an extra chromosome 21. This is already present at conception and does not develop later. The condition can be identified at birth by physical characteristics or through diagnostic tests such as karyotyping, which confirm the presence of the extra chromosome.
