What causes GDD in children?

In children, GDD is often caused by factors that affect brain growth and neurological function. These can happen before birth, during delivery, or in the early years of life.

Causes may include:
• Genetic disorders (e.g. Rett syndrome, microdeletions)
• Birth complications (e.g. lack of oxygen, trauma)
• Prematurity or neonatal intensive care complications
• Infections like meningitis or encephalitis in infancy
• Exposure to environmental toxins (e.g. alcohol during pregnancy)

Sometimes, no single cause is identified — but early intervention through the NDIS can still begin based on observed delays.
