What causes generalized anxiety disorder in kids?

In children, GAD can stem from a mix of genetic vulnerability, temperament, and environmental stress. Common contributors include:

  • Family history of anxiety or depression
  • Parenting style, such as overprotection or high criticism
  • Stressful life events, including bullying, moving schools, or family separation
  • High sensitivity to change or perceived danger

Kids may also “learn” anxious responses by observing family members. Early support can reduce long-term impacts. Book a consultation with us for a child-focused assessment.
