What causes global developmental delay?

Global Developmental Delay (GDD) can be caused by a range of factors that affect brain development either before, during, or after birth. In many cases, the cause remains unknown, even after testing.

Possible causes include:
• Genetic or chromosomal conditions (e.g. Down syndrome, Fragile X)
• Complications during pregnancy (e.g. infections, poor oxygen supply)
• Premature birth or low birth weight
• Brain injury or trauma
• Exposure to alcohol, drugs, or toxins in utero

Understanding the cause can help tailor the support plan, but even without a known cause, children with GDD can access NDIS-funded therapies.
