What does childhood apraxia of speech look like compared to speech delay?

CAS and general speech delay may appear similar at first but have distinct differences:

  • Speech Delay: Children follow a typical speech development path but progress slower. Errors are usually consistent and predictable.
  • CAS: Speech errors are inconsistent and unpredictable. Children may struggle to imitate sounds, show groping movements, and have difficulty sequencing speech sounds.
While both may result in unclear speech, CAS requires more intensive and specialised therapy. Understanding the distinction helps families seek the right support sooner.
