What happens if a Down syndrome test is positive?

A positive Down syndrome test result means the screening has shown a higher chance your baby may have Down syndrome. It is important to understand that screening tests do not provide a definite diagnosis – they only measure risk. If your result is positive:
  • • Your healthcare provider will explain the result in detail and discuss the next steps.
  • • You may be referred to a genetic counsellor for personalised support and information.
  • • Further diagnostic testing, such as chorionic villus sampling (CVS) or amniocentesis, may be offered. These tests can confirm with more certainty whether the baby has Down syndrome.
  • • Support services and resources can be discussed early to help families prepare.
Many parents find this stage overwhelming, so seeking professional guidance is vital. Remember, a positive result is not a diagnosis, but it is a sign to consider further testing and support.
