What is ARFID?

Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is a recognised eating disorder where a person avoids or restricts food intake, leading to nutritional deficiencies, weight loss (or poor growth in children), and difficulties in daily functioning.

Unlike other eating disorders, ARFID is not about body image concerns but rather linked to sensory sensitivities, fear of adverse consequences (like choking or vomiting), or low interest in eating. In Australia, ARFID is increasingly identified in children, teens, and adults, and it can significantly impact health and development if left untreated. Early recognition and intervention are essential.

If you suspect ARFID in your child or family member, professional assessment and therapy can make a big difference.
