What is developmental language disorder (DLD) in the DSM-5?

In the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders – 5th Edition), Developmental Language Disorder falls under the broader category of Language Disorder within Communication Disorders. The DSM-5 describes it as persistent difficulties in acquiring and using language across modalities (spoken, written, sign) due to deficits in comprehension or production.

These difficulties include:
  • Reduced vocabulary.
  • Limited sentence structure.
  • Impaired ability to use language for conversation or storytelling.
Importantly, these challenges cannot be explained by hearing loss, intellectual disability, or other medical conditions.

Understanding DSM-5 criteria can help families access the right NDIS and clinical supports.
