What is Down syndrome?
Down syndrome is a genetic condition that occurs when a person is born with an extra copy of chromosome 21. This additional genetic material alters the typical course of development and leads to the physical and intellectual characteristics associated with Down syndrome. In Australia, Down syndrome is the most common chromosomal condition, occurring in about 1 in every 700 births.
People with Down syndrome may experience mild to moderate intellectual disability, distinct facial features, and potential health concerns, but each individual is unique in their abilities and personality.
Down syndrome does not define a person—it is simply one part of who they are, and with the right supports, many individuals live healthy, meaningful, and independent lives.
